Duodenal Switch Surgery in Istanbul, Turkey

A Comprehensive Solution for Weight Loss

If weight loss has been a persistent challenge, Duodenal Switch Surgery at Marmara Health Clinic in Istanbul, Turkey offers a proven, effective solution. Our board-certified surgeons are specialized in this advanced procedure.

The Duodenal Switch is a two-pronged surgical approach that involves reducing the stomach size and rerouting the small intestine, offering a comprehensive solution for weight loss and metabolic improvement.

This special type of bariatric surgery combines the restrictive techniques of a gastric sleeve with the malabsorptive benefits of a gastric bypass to obtain the best possible results of weight loss.

If you have a BMI of 60 or above, or if you suffer from weight-related health problems like hypertension, hyperlipidemia or hard to control type 2 diabetes, you may qualify for this procedure.

How Duodenal Switch Surgery Works

Duodenal Switch (DS) surgery utilizes both restriction and malabsorption mechanisms to yield significant weight loss. It tackles obesity in 3 different ways,

Sleeve Gastrectomy to Reduce Stomach Volume

In a similar fashion to gastric sleeve surgery, 70% of the stomach is resected and permanently removed. This restrictive technique allows patients to feel fuller faster while also reducing ghrelin production. As a result, the stomach capacity holds less food while controlling calorie intake.

Bypass Intestines to Create Malabsorption

Next, rerouting the intestines is performed to induce malabsorption and, therefore, additional weight loss. The food bypasses the upper part of the small intestine to decrease caloric absorption significantly in comparison to before surgery.

Feel Full Faster and Absorb Fewer Calories

Connecting the small intestine to the duodenum changes how bile and digestive juices break down food. In doing so, the absorption of nutrients (protein and fat) is diminished by nearly 80% contributing to more weight reduction.

Determining Candidacy

Duodenal switch patients must be well studied and classified. Because of generally high BMIs, the procedure may be executed at two separate times, this depends on many factors. Since the BPD/DS combines two different procedures, greater weight loss can be expected compared to what other bariatric procedures provide. In fact, most patients lose at least half their excess weight within a year of their surgery.

However, there is consequently a potential for nutrient deficiencies due to malabsorption, making strict and effective supplementation mandatory. As such, this surgery is typically recommended for patients at or above 60 BMI (body mass index) or for patients who suffer from serious and uncontrolled weight-related health problems, such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Sleep apnea
  • Severe hyperlipidemia

Patients that are willing to go through a BPD/DS should be fully aware of its side effects and the changes of dietary and supplementary habits that it entails after the surgery, starting at its recovery period and going forward in the long term after the procedure. They should be committed to follow the post-operative instructions beforehand, as these may be different to what they expect or might imply big changes in their current lifestyle.

Any vitamin deficiency must be identified, assessed and corrected prior to surgery with appropriate supplementation, as this makes prevention and treatment of nutrition deficiencies easier after surgery.

During your first discussion with the doctor and her team, she can evaluate your medical history and weight loss goals to determine whether a duodenal switch is appropriate for you.

Benefits of Duodenal Switch Surgery in Istanbul

  • Rapid Weight Loss: Achieve significant weight loss within the first year.
  • Metabolic Improvement: Enhance your metabolism for sustained weight loss.
  • Resolution of Co-morbidities: Potential for resolving Type 2 Diabetes and other obesity-related conditions.
  • Nutrient Absorption: Allows for some degree of nutrient absorption, unlike other procedures.

The Outcomes Of The Duodenal Switch Surgery

Most of the patients that choose to undergo the Duodenal Switch Surgery at the Marmara Health Clinic reported an approximate 80 percent reduction of the additional body weight.

After the Duodenal Switch Surgery, the patient may experience improvement and even complete cure of the symptoms of obesity-induced health conditions. This may include depression, increased cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea. The rate of diabetes cure is significantly higher after the Duodenal Switch Surgery.

The risk of medical complications particularly the dumping syndrome is significantly low with the Duodenal Switch Surgery. Dumping syndrome causes nausea, vomiting, cramping, diarrhea, sweating, or heart palpitations when a patient attempts to eat hastily or consumes sugar or carbohydrates after bariatric surgery. In Duodenal Switch Surgery, the preservation of pyloric valve assures a rather normal draining of solid food from the stomach, allowing patients to enjoy regular food and minimizing the risk of dumping syndrome.

The Duodenal Switch Surgery is a pill-friendly procedure and Aspirin and NSAIDs are well tolerated by the patients.

FAQ Duodenal Switch Surgery in Istanbul Turkey

Will I be sick a lot after the operation?

The duodenal switch limits food intake. If you feel nauseated or sick on a regular basis, it may mean that you are not chewing your food well or that you are not following the diet rules properly. Vomiting should be avoided during the early stages of recovery while your new stomach heals.

How long will it take to recover after surgery?

As weight loss surgery is performed laparoscopically, patients typically spend 5-6 days in hospital. It takes most patients about 4 weeks to return to work and six weeks to resume exercising.

How much weight will I lose?

Weight-loss results vary from patient to patient, and the amount of weight you may lose depends on several things. However, with the restriction from the sleeve and malabsoprtion of the intestines the average excess weight loss achieved is 80-90%. Twelve to eighteen months after the operation, weekly weight loss is usually less. Your main goal is to have weight loss that prevents, improves, or resolves health problems connected with severe obesity.

Does weight loss surgery require frequent office visits after surgery?

It is important to be reviewed in the clinic on a regular basis for life. You should have regular blood tests to check your vitamin and mineral levels, and be reviewed by your surgeon or nurse. In the long term you should have a medical check up twice a year, and under a DEXA scan to check your bone density every two years.

Does the duodenal switch restrict any physical activity?

The gastric bypass does not affect or hamper physical activity including aerobics, stretching and strenuous exercise.

Will I need plastic surgery for the surplus skin when I have lost a lot of weight?

With massive weight loss, this can be likely. As a rule, plastic surgery will not be considered for at least a year or two after the operation. Sometimes the skin will mold itself around the new body tissue. You should give the skin the time it needs to adjust before you decide to have more surgery. However, the more you exercise during the first year following surgery the more fat you burn and muscle you tone.

Will I feel hungry or deprived after the duodenal switch?

This is rare. A feeling of fullness is common with small portions following a duodenal switch. The challange with this type of surgery is to eat sufficient protein every day (100g a day is recommended).

What will happen if I become ill or need an operation?

The duodenal switch, although restricting your food intake and absorption, is not affected by illness. However, prior to undergoing further abdominal surgery it is wise to speak with your surgeon.

What about pregnancy?

Becoming pregnant can be easier as you lose weight. Your menstrual cycle may become more regular. It is possible to have a safe pregnancy with a duodenal switch, but it is essential to undergo regular blood tests during pregnancy to ensure you do not become deficient in essential vitamins and minerals.

Will I need to take vitamin supplements?

Absoulely. It is essential that you take daily supplementation in the long term. These include a multivitamin as well as extra iron, zinc and calcium – for life.

What about other medication?

You should be able to take prescribed medication. You may need to use capsules, break big tablets in half or dissolve them in water so they do not get stuck and make you sick. You should always ask the doctor who prescribes the drugs about this.

What if I go out to eat?

Order only a small amount of food, such as an appetizer. Eat slowly. Finish at the same time as your table companions. You might want to let your host or hostess know in advance that you cannot eat very much.

What about alcohol?

Alcohol has a high number of calories. It also breaks down vitamins. An occasional glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage, though, is not considered harmful to weight loss.

Can I eat anything in moderation?

After your stomach has healed, you may eat most foods that don't cause you discomfort. However, because you can only eat a little it is important to include foods full of important vitamins and nutrients. It is essential to consume 100g of protein in your diet daily to avoid protein malnutrition. If you eat foods that contain lots of sugar and fat or drink liquids full of "empty" calories, such as milkshakes, the effect of your surgery can be reduced, and will increase the frequency of bowel movements.

Will I suffer from diarrhoea?

This is a recognised side effect of having extreme malabsorption. You can experience bowel movement up to 5-6 times a day.
